Warren Co. officers undergo 'active violence' training

LEBANON, OH (FOX19) - In light of recent school violence, the Warren County Police Chiefs Association formed a multi-jurisdictional training team to provide "Active Violence" training for every officer in Warren County.

The team consists of deputies from the Warren County Sheriff's Office and officers from the following police departments: Springboro, Mason, Franklin, Lebanon, Clearcreek Township, and Hamilton Township. In addition members from the Warren County Combined Tactical Response Unit are also involved in the training. 

This realistic training focuses on teaching single and double officer responses to an act of violence in an effort to minimize response time, thereby reducing casualties. Officers attending the training receive a classroom session, then practical exercises leading up to two realistic active shooter scenarios. During the two week training period over 200 officers will attend the training.

The interactive seminar, in which industry experts will discuss and demonstrate the latest in Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology, is free to business customers in the area.

In addition, attendees will learn new ways of engaging and enabling their assets, workforce and customers. The seminar is from 8:30am - 11:30am at the Cincinnati Marriott Northeast on Mason Montgomery Road.

Otterbein Lebanon resident celebrates 106th birthday

LEBANON, OH (FOX19) - A resident of the Otterbein Lebanon Senior Lifestyle Community recently celebrated her 106th year on Earth.

Grace DiGiovanni hit the milestone birthday on May 11. She celebrated with over 100 friends and relatives with a party was held at Otterbein Lebanon Senior Lifestyle Community.

DiGiovanni was born in 1907  to Lena and Tony Danna, both Italian immigrants who came to the U.S. through Ellis Island. The eldest of 10 children, she grew up in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., where she worked at a hardware store in her younger years. In the 1930s, she married her late husband, Michael DiGiovanni, with whom she had two children, Jimmy and Marie. During this time, she worked as a nursery aide at a hospital.

MASON, OH (FOX19) - The Mason Community Center is offering a fitness training class for seniors ages 55 and older.

The class will be run each week by a certified personal trainer.

Each group will have a maximum of five members who will be held accountable to each other while achieving group and individual fitness goals.

Training sessions will be held from 8:15 to 9:00 a.m. on Wednesdays from July 10 through August 7 at Mason Community Center. Mason Community Center Premier members may participate for $26. The cost for Basic members is $30. The non-member fee is $38 for Mason residents and $45 for non-residents.

KINGS MILLS, OH (FOX19) - The staff and administration of the Kings Local School District have been undergoing training on Google Apps for Education.

The Google program allows schools to give Google’s communication and collaboration applications to their entire education community for free, which will yield significant savings in technology budgets.  By being connected to a common e-mail, chat, and calendar system, as well as presentation and video tools, it will enable students and staff to work together and learn more effectively and efficiently.

By the time school starts in the fall, the district will have 805 Google Chromebooks on 27 carts across the district.  Kings will be joining over 8 million other students and teachers that are already using Google Apps at schools around the world.

LEBANON, OH (FOX19) - Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices in Lebanon has completed plans to build two skilled nursing and rehab neighborhoods in Franklin County in 2013.

The “small houses” are a unique concept designed to de-institutionalize traditional skilled nursing home care.

Groundbreaking for the Columbus/New Albany location at 6127 Harlem Rd. is set for June 21, and the public is invited to attend.

Refreshments will be served from 9:15-10 a.m., with the groundbreaking ceremony from 10-10:45 a.m. In addition to Otterbein executives and representatives from the architect and builder, the keynote speaker will be Bonnie Kantor-Burman, director of Ohio’s Department of Aging.

Mason students win top awards in National French Test

Mason students win top awards in National French Test

MASON, OH (FOX19) - Thirteen Mason High School students received awards and top scores on this year’s Le Grand Concours, an annual academic French competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French that is open to superior students in all 50 states and abroad.

Katie Hibner and Divya Takkellapati were awarded the esteemed Lauréat du Chapitre prize.  Takkellapati placed second in the nation, and Hibner ranked  fifth in the nation.

Out of the more than 24,000 Level II students and 19,000 Level III students who took the National French Test in March, 60 percent of the participating MHS students were recognized for their state rank. 

MHS took eight out of Ohio’s Level II top 10 spots. Hibner, Andrea Castillo-Beroes, Abbie Etherington, Melissa Groenwold, Gabrielle Honda, Sheila Raghavendran, Andrew Treneman and Gabrielle Stichweh all placed in Ohio’s Top 10.
