After 65 years, local veteran receives Little Miami diploma

After 65 years, local veteran receives Little Miami diploma

MAINEVILLE, OH (FOX19) - (Sent by Melinda Briggs)

When Don Whitacre left high school, Harry S Truman was president, World War II had ended, and conflicts in Korea and Southeast Asia were heating up.

As a teen, Whitacre and many of his friends witnessed the news of WWII and were seized by a patriotic fervor -- they wanted to "join up" and do their part in the war effort. Whitacre felt so deeply about this that he left school before his senior year and entered the United States Army. In doing so, he sacrificed the opportunity to graduate with his class of 1948 and missed out on getting a high school diploma.

After 65 years, that is no longer the case.

Little Miami Superintendent Greg Power and Board President Stephanie Baxter Black presented Robert Donald Whitacre with an honorary diploma at the recent Alumni Association Dinner, bringing full circle an amazing story of one man's service to his country.

MASON, OH (FOX19) - Hundreds of elementary students’ fire safety posters were submitted to the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office last fall, but only 12 were chosen to be on display at the Ohio State Fair. Two of those works belong to Mason Intermediate fourth graders: Gracie Bagadiong and Luna Brenner.

On May 13, Bagadiong and Brenner received a special visit from Jennifer Snyder, Fire Safety Educator for the Ohio Fire Marshal, who presented the girls with an award certificate, smoke detector, and two complimentary tickets to the state fair.

These are the sixth Mason Intermediate student to win the state contest in the ten years that Moschell’s students have participated.
