MASON, OH (FOX19) - Where should you shop once inside the grocery store?  The Mason Community Center is offering to help you find the correct food items to keep you healthy.

You can take a personalized grocery store walk-thru with a registered dietitian on Wednesday, March 14.  The dietician will take a small group through the store to look at labels, pick healthy options, and talk about smart food purchases. During this 90-minute program, you will also learn about MyPlate, the nutrition concept from the USDA that has replaced the Food Pyramid, and be served a lunch to show your balanced plate.

Two sessions will be held at the Biggs store in Mason. You can choose to meet the dietician at either 11 a.m. or noon in the main entrance of the store.

Area firefighters sign up for Carew Tower climb

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - For the average person, climbing 45 flights of the Carew Tower can take up to twenty minutes. Now imagine if you had to climb those stairs wearing 67 pounds of gear including boots, coat and helmet. This is what over 70 firefighters from the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky areas will experience when they compete in the Firefighter Challenge of the American Lung Association's 2012 Fight for Air Climb.

The 7th Annual Fight for Air Climb will be held at the Carew Tower in downtown Cincinnati on Sunday, February 19th from 6:30am-2pm.

This unique event is where participants climb 45 flights (or 804 total steps) to the Top of the Carew Tower -- all to raise awareness and funds to support the mission of the American Lung Association.

So far, 15 firefighter teams are registered for the climb.  Participating fire departments include Clearcreek, Colerain Township, Fairfield, Wilder, Ft.

MASON, OH (FOX19) - Physicians, nurses and educators from the University of Cincinnati departments of emergency medicine, trauma and critical care and cardiology, along with Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center, University Hospital Air Care and Mobile Care and UC Health West Chester Medical Center are partnering to hold the 2012 EMS Midwest Conference, an educational conference discussing the latest in EMS knowledge for local and regional EMS departments.

The 2012 EMS Midwest Conference will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, and Sunday, Feb. 19, at the Great Wolf Lodge in Mason.

During the conference, UC faculty will present research and best practices for EMS services on topics including traumatic brain injury, sepsis care, pediatric disaster preparedness, toxicological emergencies and managing new cardiology technology.

Group takes on teen suicide with a musical drama

 

KINGS MILLS, OH (FOX19) - On Saturday, February 11 & Sunday, February 12, a musical drama performance of "Dead Serious...About Life" will be presented at Kings High School in Kings Mill, Ohio. The performance on Saturday begins at 6:00 p.m. and the Sunday performance begins at 3:00 p.m. The musical will be performed by a group called Mishpachah, Inc., which is based out of Mason, Ohio.

Mishpachah, Inc. is an auditioned group of high school students from the Cincinnati, Ohio area who participate in this community drama/music group. The group's unique name "Mishpachah" is a Hebrew word that means family or clan. "Mish" as they are called, is known for their radical and exceptional style and choreography. In the ‘11-’12 performance year, the group consist of 36 students representing 20 different school districts and 24 different churches.

WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19) - Last fall, the West Chester Fraternal Order of Police held their 14th annual Golf Outing.  One of the recipients of their fundraising efforts was Maddie's Hope. Maddie’s Hope is a charity started by Sergeant Brian Dulle's family for the purpose of assisting children and their families in the fight against cancer.

The foundation is named after Sergeant Dulle’s daughter, Maddie Dulle, who has been battling cancer for the last several years.

Thursday, Matt Tombragel and John Morgan of the West Chester Police Department presented a check for $4,000 to Sheriff Larry Sims on behalf of FOP Lodge 186 for Maddie's Hope.

Sheriff Sims said, "We are deeply touched that the West Chester FOP chose to honor Sergeant Dulle in this way.  On behalf of the Dulle family, I want to extend our profound gratitude".

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Hoxworth Blood Center is celebrating National Volunteer Blood Donor Month by releasing a limited-edition 2012 winter T-shirt. These timeless editions are available once a year and only for blood donors as appreciation for their gift of life. All donors who give blood between Mon., January 9 and Sat., January 14, at a Neighborhood Donor Center will receive the shirt.
