MHS senior named intel semifinalist for years of research inspired by grandfather

MASON, OH (FOX19) - Mason High School senior, Peeyush Shrivastava's, was recently named a semifinalist in the Intel Science Talent Search, the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science competition, for Investigations Into CaMKII Regulation of Cardiac Excitability.  But he is quick to share that his journey started long ago, and was inspired by his ailing grandfather and hero.

“When I was in sixth grade my grandfather was diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia, and other health complications. I felt like my innocence was stripped away as I saw how he was struggling, and I wanted to try to figure out exactly what was happening so that no other family would have to experience what ours was going through,” said Shrivastava.

Warren County residents among Class of 2013 Service Academy nominees

WASHINGTON, D.C. (FOX19) – Service Academy nominees and their families were honored in Washington DC over the weekend by Senator Rob Portman.

This year’s Southwest Ohio nominees are from Clark, Clermont, Greene, Hamilton, Montgomery, and Warren Counties including August Uecker of Mason nominated to Naval Academy and Samuel Mahle of Lebanon nominated to West Point. 

“Our nominees are among the best and the brightest from Ohio, and I would be proud to have them serve our country in the military,” Portman said.  “The distinguished members of the Review Board have helped me and our office guarantee that young men and women like the ones we selected this year have a chance to get into one of the service academies, and I am grateful for their tireless and selfless dedication to continuing Ohio’s strong tradition of high acceptance rates.”

WARREN COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - A Warren County man has been named a judge in the US Army Reserve.

Gary Loxley, of Clearcreek Township, will attend qualification training at The Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School in Charlottesville, Virginia, and will then be assigned to the Second Judicial Circuit as an Army Reserve Military Judge.  Loxley, 51, is an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office.

Army Reserve Judges perform duties similar to those of United States Federal District Court Judges and preside over Special Courts-Martial on active duty installations, conduct military legal training, and serve as legal advisors to administrative boards.

LEBANON, OH (FOX19) - Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper James D. Sparkman has been selected 2012 Trooper of the Year at the Lebanon Post.

The selection of Trooper Sparkman, 30, is in recognition of outstanding service during 2012 at the Lebanon Post.  Fellow officers stationed at the Lebanon Post chose Trooper Sparkman based on leadership abilities, professional ethics, courteous treatment of others, enthusiastic work attitude, and cooperation with supervisors, peers and the public.

LEBANON, OH (FOX19) - Ohio State Highway Patrol Dispatcher Sarah C. May has been selected 2012 Dispatcher of the Year at the Lebanon Communication Center.

The selection of Dispatcher May, 30, is in recognition of outstanding service during 2012 at the Lebanon Communication Center.  Post Management and fellow dispatchers chose Dispatcher May based on technical job knowledge and ability, enthusiastic work attitude, teamwork, and prompt and courteous response to the public’s requests for information and assistance.

Dispatcher May was also selected as the 2012 District Eight Dispatcher of the Year and is now in contention for State Dispatcher of the Year honors.

Dispatcher May joined the Highway Patrol in 2007 and was assigned to the Wilmington Communication Center.  She has served at the Lebanon Communication Center since March of 2012.  Originally from Zanesville, Ohio, Dispatcher May graduated from Philo High School in 2000.

Lebanon Police Department hires new officers

LEBANON, OH (FOX19) - The Lebanon Police Department has hired two new officers to help keep residents safe.

Chief of Police Jeffrey Mitchell announced on Monday the hiring of two new police officers, Officers Dustin Kurilko and Gregory Stallard.  Officer Kurilko is a graduate of Little Miami High School and a graduate of University of Cincinnati Clermont Police Academy.  Officer Kurilko is currently a criminal justice major at the University of Cincinnati.  Officer Stallard is a graduate of Beavercreek High School, has an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Sinclair Community College and is currently a criminal justice major at Wright State University.  Officer Stallard is a US Army veteran, having served on active duty at Ft. Stewart, GA, and deployed to Iraq in 2007.

Ed McHale inducted into Kings Island Hall of Fame

MASON, OH (FOX19) - Ed McHale was inducted into the Kings Island Hall of Fame during a ceremony Saturday, October 27.  McHale began his career in the amusement park industry in 1952 at Cincinnati’s Coney Island.

He moved into a management position in 1959 and played an instrumental role in the planning and development of Kings Island, including overseeing the transportation of the rides and attractions from Coney Island to Kings Island in the fall of 1971.  After spending the 1972 season as park operations manager, McHale was promoted to general manager, a position he held until 1976.
