Mason resident first to intern at Smithsonian

MASON, OH (FOX19) - Tyler Imfeld of Mason, a senior in biology with minors in environmental studies and German at Xavier University, is interning in the lab of the Department of Mineral Sciences at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. He found the 10-week internship at the suggestion of one of his Xavier professors who suggested he apply for summer REUs (research experiences for undergraduates). Tyler arrived in DC a few days prior to beginning the program and lives in an on-campus apartment at George Washington University. He will return to Cincinnati in early August to prepare for his senior year.

Woman celebrates 90th birthday by riding Kings Island coaster

MASON, OH (FOX19) - Mount Lookout resident Thelma Gratsh took the plunge Friday on the Diamondback roller coaster at Kings Island.

Thelma celebrated her 90th birthday by taking a ride on her favorite roller coaster, Diamondback.

Thelma estimates she has ridden Diamondback more than 100 times since the ride opened in 2009.  

She has had a season pass to Kings Island every year since they were introduced in 1979 and is believed to be the oldest park guest to have taken a ride on the 230-foot tall steel roller coaster, which reaches speeds up to 80 miles per hour.

Interim principal named at Fenwick High

FRANKLIN, OH (FOX19) - Trevor Block, Dean of Academics at Bishop Fenwick High School in Franklin, Ohio, has been appointed interim principal of Fenwick for the 2012-2013 school year by Cincinnati Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr.

He succeeds Michael Miller, who resigned on Wednesday, June 13, after three years as principal.

“Mr. Block is a known and respected presence in the Fenwick community,” said Dr. Jim Rigg, Director of Educational Services and Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. “He has served as Dean of Academics since 2010.

“Mr. Block has been instrumental in nurturing the academic quality of Fenwick, and in assuring that the school offers the best possible programs to its students. Prior to joining Fenwick, Mr. Block worked as a secondary social studies teacher and curriculum specialist in Houston, Texas.

Lebanon student's culinary team wins Ohio title, heads to regional event

CLIFTON, OH (FOX19) - Fresh from a winning performance in the recent Ohio Cookoff competition, a student team from the Midwest Culinary Institute will head to Niagara Falls next month to compete at the 2012 American Culinary Federation’s Northeast Regional Conference.

During the Ohio Cookoff event held last month, the Cincinnati State team garnered a gold medal in the skills competition and a silver medal in the cooking competition, winning an overall national silver medal and the right to represent the state of Ohio at the ACF Regional Conference. There they will compete for the right to represent the Northeast Region for the national title at the ACF national convention, which will be held this July in Orlando.

The team is led by Master Chef John Kinsella and coached by MCI instructors George Zappas, Michael VanFleet, and Laura Horn.

Otterbein Lebanon announces new senior minister

LEBANON, OH (FOX19) - George C. Phillips will be joining the Otterbein Lebanon family as senior minister of the United Methodist Church at Otterbein, and as one of Otterbein Lebanon’s chaplains. Phillips will be taking over the position of The Rev. James Ludwick, who is retiring.

The Otterbein announcement was recently made by George Brown, Otterbein’s chairman of the new reverend search committee, and Jason Miller, vice president of Otterbein Lebanon Senior Lifestyle Community; and coincided with The Rev. Phillips announcement to his parishioners and friends at the Mason United Methodist Church, where he has served for nearly nine years.

On Feb. 4, Phillips was asked by District Superintendent Rev. Brian Brown to accept Bishop Ough’s appointment to be the senior minister of the Otterbein UMC.

Former Ohio legislator George Terwilleger dies

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, WARREN COUNTY, OH (FOX19) – Former State Representative George Terwilleger died Sunday at age 71 at Hospice of Cincinnati after a long illness.

Terwilleger was born February 3rd 1941 in Cozaddale, Ohio to Charles and Myrtle Terwilleger. He was married to Jacqualine Johnson of Glen Hayes, West Virginia on April 8th 1962. He was the father of DeWayne Terwilleger (Robyn) of Harlan Township, DeLanna Terwilleger-Oeder (Craig)and DeAnna Mengle (David) of Hamilton Township. He had 6 grandchildren and , Carl Oeder, Sam Mengle, Corenna Oeder, Cordell Oeder, Dawson Terwilleger, and Corissa Oeder. He had 4 Step-Grandchildren, Dacey Dickerson, Lonnie Dickerson, Kaila Partin, and Hannah Partin, and had 3 Great-Grandchildren, Michael Dickerson, Erin Dickerson, and Matthew Dickerson.

Two patrol officers promoted to sergeant in Lebanon

LEBANON, OH (FOX19) - The Lebanon police department announced on Friday the promotion of two patrol officers to the rank of sergeant.

Officer Mark Allen was promoted to sergeant on Jan. 20. Sergeant Allen has been with the Lebanon Police Department for 18 years, serving as detective for the past 18 months.

Officer Michael McCutchan was promoted to the rank of sergeant on Feb. 16. Sergeant McCutchan has been with the department for 11 years. Sergeant McCuchan has been assigned as the dayshift Shift Commander.

These promotions were the result of the vacancies created by the selection of Chief Mitchell as Chief of Police and the pending retirement of Sgt. Charles Duerre.
