MI 6th Graders Organize Reading Flash Mob

MASON, OH (FOX19) - Mason Intermediate's Team Ingenuity kicked off the Mason Schools Foundation Reading Challenge in a manner suited to the theme, We Read...Wii Rock. On February 7 during lunch, these sixth graders organized a flash mob that emphasized the importance of reading, while showing everyone that they know how to rock!

Team Ingenuity teachers Chris Anderson, Sandy Gemmel, Jill Moberly, Holly Popplewell, and Leslie Smith saw a reading-themed flash mob on YouTube and decided this would be a perfect way to kick off the school's Reading Challenge. Using the song, "I Gotta Keep Reading," set to the tune of "Tonight's Gonna Be a Good Night" by The Black Eyed Peas, Team Ingenuity surprised students in the cafeteria with their flash mob. Students also brought in books to hold during the flash mob that they then donated to a Cincinnati Public School in need of books.

Love for Reading Generates High Bids at Auction

MASON, OH (FOX19) - For Mason Heights second graders in Michelle Byrd's class, January 28 was worth the wait! Students have been logging their reading time since August in anticipation of Byrd's famous Reading for Dollars Auction.

What started seventeen years ago when she was a fourth grade teacher at Western Row has "grown by leaps and bounds," said Byrd. The Auction has evolved, from the number of items up for bidding to the number of volunteers required to pull it off, which means there is now "a lot of behind the scenes work involved," shared Byrd. She has former students come back to help and now has a Reading for Dollars Auction committee, made up of parents who solicit businesses for donations and facilitate the year-round project. "I couldn't do this without parent support," said Byrd.
