Kings High School ESL Students Create Map

Kings High School ESL Students Create Map

KINGS MILLS, OH (FOX19) - The English as a Second Language students or ESL at Kings High School wanted to leave their mark on a map.

With the help of their teacher Rhonda Allen-Harman, the students created a world map graphic that is near the guidance office. Each student placed a star on the map to show where they are from.

Their goal is to have teachers and other international students place a star on the map too. “They are very excited and proud of this project which they hope will help build awareness about the increasing diversity of our student body and community,” Mrs. Allen-Harman said.

Maineville students learn about birds of prey

MAINEVILLE, OH (FOX19) - A sharp beak, even sharper talons and strong wings aren't always enough to protect Ohio's birds of prey, students at Hamilton-Maineville Primary School recently learned.

RAPTOR, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of birds of prey, brought several birds to school recently in order for students to learn adaptations, habitat, and more about local raptors.

Each of the birds in the RAPTOR program came to the organization with some sort of injury. If it is able, the group rehabilitates the bird to be released back into the wild. But if the bird's injuries are such that it could not survive on its own, the group uses the bird as part of their educational program to teach the public more about these majestic creatures.

Students at Maineville learned about an owl, an otherwise healthy American kestrel who is blind in one eye, and a red-shouldered hawk with an injured wing. The visit was sponsored by the Maineville PTO.

Students chose their favorite American, researched his or her life and then portrayed that person in the "museum."

Parents, family members and other students were able to stop by each "exhibit" and hear the student give a short speech about his or her character. Students portrayed everyone from Sacajawea to Henry Ford, in full costume.

MORROW, OH (FOX19) - Most of the time, water and wind exist without much notice from humans, but these natural elements are constantly changing the land on which we live.

Little Miami students learned about the effects of water and wind erosion this week when Marta Farrell with the Warren County Soil and Water Conservation agency made a presentation at Salem Twp. Elementary School.

Students did a number of hands-on science experiments to cause erosion on a small scale, and to learn about physical and chemical changes in rocks and soil.

MASON, OH (FOX19) - Mason High School senior, Peeyush Shrivastava's, was recently named a semifinalist in the Intel Science Talent Search, the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science competition, for Investigations Into CaMKII Regulation of Cardiac Excitability.  But he is quick to share that his journey started long ago, and was inspired by his ailing grandfather and hero.

“When I was in sixth grade my grandfather was diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia, and other health complications. I felt like my innocence was stripped away as I saw how he was struggling, and I wanted to try to figure out exactly what was happening so that no other family would have to experience what ours was going through,” said Shrivastava.

Mason Schools moving to semesters in 2014-2015

MASON, OH (FOX19) - The Mason City School District is returning to dividing teh academic school year into semesters.

Mason is making the move for the 2014-2015 school year and leaving behind the three 12-week trimesters.

Also, the Ohio Graduation Test will be replaced by a series of end-of-course exams in core high school subjects, including English I, II and III; Algebra I and II; Geometry; Biology; Physical Science; American History; and American Government.

Semesters will ensure that students are currently enrolled in the course when the exam is administered. All Ohio public universities have agreed that any student who passes all end-of-course exams will not be required to take college remedial courses, which can be costly and impact a student’s ability to graduate in four years.
