Improving student athlete performance at Mason Community Center

MASON, OH (FOX19) - Give your student athlete an advantage this new year by signing him or her up for Mason Community Center’s Youth Strength & Agility program.

This program will help 9- to 14-year-old students maintain and increase their athletic ability during the off season. We will work on getting them stronger and faster by working on strength, speed, and endurance – all while helping prevent injuries that can be caused by under conditioning.

Students will meet from 6 to 6:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 4 weeks beginning January 8. Register using activity number 161802 at www.imaginemason.org if you already have an account, by stopping in, or by calling Mason Community Center at 513-229-8555. The fee is $48 for Community Center Premier members, $57 for Basic members, $72 for Mason residents, and $86 for non-residents.

US Geological Survey Hydrologist visits Columbia Intermediate School

KINGS MILLS, OH (FOX19) - Paul Schuster, Hydrologist with the United States Geological Survey in Colorado, visited Columbia Intermediate School on Thursday, Dec. 20.

In Janie Winterhalter’s Science class at CIS students have been studying geology and how it relates to the environment.

Mr. Schuster wowed students with pictures and stories about an expedition he and his team went on to the Fremont Glacier. He talked to students about the many exciting aspects of his job, including living on a glacier for several months, traveling throughout the United States, designing and building instruments, and much more. He also brought along his large rock collection which includes different kinds of quartz, igneous rock, and much more.

Kings High School Juniors accepted to TAP MD Program

KINGS MILLS, OH (FOX19) - Kings High School juniors Casey Ryan and Kyle Palmer have just been  accepted into the prestigious TAP MD program with the Greater Cincinnati Health Council (GCHC).

The TAP MD program is designed to find untapped and talented high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine. The program helps students figure out if medicine is the right career choice for them, and what aspects of medicine they prefer.

Casey and Kyle applied for the program because they are interested in becoming doctors but aren’t quite sure which field they want to work in. Kyle thinks he would like to become a pediatrician. Casey is interested in anesthesiology and medical research. Both were very excited and surprised to find out they made it into the program.

Local Mason retailers selling student-crafted ornaments to raise money for Autism

MASON, OH (FOX19) - Mason Intermediate fifth grade teacher Amy Sheets and her Team Character students recently created unique snowflake ornaments to raise money for Autism Speaks.

“During my six years teaching in Mason, Autism has become a cause that is close to my heart.  I have worked with amazing students on the spectrum and wanted to do something in return for the ways they have inspired me and helped me grow as an educator,” said Sheets.

Each decoration is being sold for $5 with 100 percent of the proceeds being donated to Autism Speaks, the world’s leading organization for research and support of individuals with autism.  The decorations are made from recycled puzzle pieces, the symbol for Autism awareness.

South Lebanon Elementary supports Super Storm Sandy relief

LEBANON, OH (FOX19) - The students and staff at South Lebanon Elementary want to help those people who are still suffering the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy. Through December 19, the SLE Student Council will collect items to donate to Mathew 25 Ministries, who will in turn distribute those items to those in need along the east coast.

Mason schools make AP honor roll for student performance gain

MASON, OH (FOX19) - The Mason City School District is one of 539 districts nationally being honored by the College Board with placement on the 3rd Annual AP® District Honor Roll for simultaneously increasing access to Advanced Placement® course work while increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams.

From 2010 to 2012, Mason increased the number of students participating in AP from 529 to 705, while increasing the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher (the score typically needed to earn college credit) from 85% in 2010 to 89% in 2012. Earning a score of 3 or higher can potentially save students and their families thousands of dollars in college tuition.

Student brings Bengals player A.J. Green for Show and Tell

MASON, OH (FOX19)  - A 10-year old student at Mason Intermediate School presented the ultimate Show and Tell for her class on Tuesday.

Kylee Bennett was the lucky winner randomly selected to take a player to school in the Verizon Wireless Show N Tell with the NFL. Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green was Kylee's special guest.

Verizon Wireless Stores recently participated in Show N Tell with the NFL sweepstakes where students ages 6 to 13 could enter to take an NFL player to school.  Sweepstakes winner Kylee Bennett got to meet A.J. Green, introduce him to her class and share facts about Green with the class.

Green also spoke to the students on his own health and fitness habits, the importance of staying fit, playing 60 minutes per day and making good food choices.
